I was walking along Second Beach in Olympic National Park when I saw a large flock of immature seagulls in the distance, clustered together at the water’s edge. As I moved slowly toward them, they scuttered en masse away from me further along the beach until they eventually took flight.
They swirled around the inlet in a very tight formation for a good five minutes before eventually dispersing, some still aloft, others alighting on the water (Taking Flight No.2). I’d never seen behavior like that before!
I felt that a black and white interpretation was the best way to convey the feeling of movement and energy in the photo.
